Welcome to Otto Aquatics

2024: Beginning a New Era of Resurgence

Otto Aquatics, one of the oldest aquatic clubs in the country, welcomes you to our place on the web. Whether you are just visiting, looking for some background information on our club, wanting to know our current programmes and activities or to find some interesting pictures, we hope you'll enjoy your time here!

In 2024, Otto celebrates its sixty years in existence - few clubs on continental Africa can compete with that statistic! But behind this number, the untold story of struggle exists in many shapes and forms. From the days of apartheid through the emergence of democratic South Africa, and to the challenges of community sporting clubs in the 21st Century - Otto continues to wither the storms, trials and tribulations.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic descended upon us in 2020, the club has been placed on a disadvantaged footing, but through the committment of its members has continued its struggle to meet its mandate: community swimming at the highest standards. Since 2020, Otto was not able to access its home base in the community, the Balkumar Singh Pool in Asherville. Following the lifting of the COVID-19 restrictions, the opening times of the pool (9-5pm) has meant that we could not access the facility for our training. Then the storms of April 2022 brought its trails of destruction - Otto was among the casualties - it's home base was destroyed beyond use, and continues to be in a unusable condition.

This has meant that the club has lost its community base, resulting in the loss of membership, loss of competitive swimmers.

In its sixth decade, Otto intends to turn a new leaf, and launch a resurgence of our proud club. Through committment and planning by the leadership, engagement with community schools and dedication of a new group of coaches, the club has emerged in 2024 season with a new band of young athletes. Under the guidance of our Senior Coach, Khathija Rajah and her dogged determination, and that of the Learn-to-Swim instructors, Nadiraah, the swimmers are going through their paces, based at the Hartley Road Primary School Swimming Pool

High up on the agenda is our Annual Inter-School Gala, back from a three year break, schedued for 3 February 2024 at the Hartley Road Primary School in Overport, our new training base. See the invitation and programme at the bottom of this page
